Louvered Shutters

Exterior louvered shutters feature horizontal slats framed by vertical stiles and horizontal rails. They are available in premium wood, PVC, aluminum, composite, economy wood, and vinyl.

Bahama Shutters

Bahama shutters mount above the window and project outward from the bottom. ShutterLand offers Bahama shutters in premium wood, PVC, and aluminum.

Raised Panel Shutters

Raised panel exterior shutters use solid recessed and raised details framed by stiles and rails for a traditional architectural appearance.

Flat Panel Shutters

Flat panel shutters feature smooth solid panels surrounded by stiles and rails. The simple design works well with both traditional and contemporary architecture.

Shaker Style Shutters

Shaker shutters combine a solid-panel design with clean, understated lines. Grooved panels can add the appearance of vertical boards within the surrounding frame.

Combination Shutters

Combination exterior shutters bring two shutter designs together in a single panel. A common configuration places louvers above a raised or solid panel, separated by a horizontal divider rail.

Board and Batten Shutters

Board and batten shutters use vertical boards joined by horizontal battens for a simple, substantial appearance. Options vary by material and may include additional battens or spacing between boards.

Styles of Exterior Shutters

Louvered Exterior Shutters

Louvered shutters are one of the most traditional and versatile exterior shutter designs. Horizontal louvers add texture and depth to the exterior while maintaining proportions appropriate for a wide range of architectural styles.

Wood and PVC louvered shutters are constructed with individual slats and open space between the louvers. Aluminum shutters also use individual louvers, while composite and vinyl reproduce the louvered appearance with different construction methods. Available materials can be selected for either functional or stationary installation depending on the product.

Bahama Shutters

Bahama shutters, sometimes called Bermuda shutters, hinge from the top of the window rather than the sides. Support arms hold the bottom of the shutter away from the building, creating an awning-like projection that can provide shade while maintaining some outward visibility.

ShutterLand offers Bahama shutters in premium wood, PVC, and aluminum. Aluminum Bahama shutters are available in both decorative and select hurricane-rated configurations. Wood and PVC Bahama shutters are functional exterior shutters but are not engineered, tested, or approved for hurricane protection.

Raised Panel Shutters

Raised panel shutters have a structured traditional appearance created by solid panels positioned between surrounding stiles and rails. They complement Colonial, Federal, Georgian, and many other architectural styles but are not limited to traditional homes.

Select raised panel shutters can be customized with decorative cutouts for additional architectural character.

Flat Panel Shutters

Flat panel shutters use smooth solid panels rather than raised inserts. Their clean surface creates a simpler appearance that can complement traditional homes as well as more contemporary architecture.

Shaker Shutters

Shaker exterior shutters have the same basic stile-and-rail structure as other solid panel shutters but use a recessed or vertically grooved center panel. The straightforward design provides some of the visual character of board and batten shutters within a framed construction.

Combination Shutters

Combination shutters incorporate two styles in one panel. Louvers are most commonly positioned above a raised or grooved panel, though other configurations may be available. A divider rail provides a natural transition between the upper and lower sections.

Board and Batten Shutters

Exterior board and batten shutters are constructed or formed to resemble vertical boards secured with horizontal battens. The style is especially common on farmhouse, cottage, rustic, and Mediterranean architecture but can also provide contrast on contemporary homes.

Choose an Exterior Shutter Material

The best shutter material depends on the desired appearance, installation, maintenance requirements, climate, and budget. ShutterLand offers six primary exterior shutter materials with different advantages. See our complete comparison of exterior shutter materials for a more detailed evaluation.

Premium Wood Shutters

Premium wood exterior shutters provide authentic solid-wood construction and traditional architectural detail. ShutterLand offers Red Grandis, Cedar, and Mahogany, each selected for exterior shutter construction.

Premium wood shutters can be installed in a fixed position or with functional hinges and are available in a broad range of styles. Wood can be factory painted, ordered primed for field painting, left unfinished, or selected for a stain-grade finish where available.

PVC Shutters

Exterior PVC shutters combine traditional solid-component construction with excellent resistance to moisture. Individual components closely reproduce the proportions and appearance of wood shutters without the same concerns about moisture absorption or decay.

PVC shutters can be installed with functional hinges or mounted in a stationary position. They are particularly well suited for projects where durability, low maintenance, and traditional construction are priorities.

Aluminum Shutters

Exterior aluminum shutters provide exceptional strength with relatively low maintenance. ShutterLand offers aluminum in Colonial-style louvered and Bahama configurations.

Decorative aluminum shutters are durable and functional but are not intended for hurricane protection. Select aluminum products are specifically engineered and impact tested for hurricane applications. Homeowners in hurricane-prone areas should verify the required product approval and local building-code requirements before ordering.

Composite Shutters

Exterior composite shutters are constructed from Extira, a dense engineered wood material made for exterior applications. The material provides the substantial appearance of a custom shutter while resisting moisture, rot, and insect damage.

Composite shutters have architectural detail on the front and a flat back. They are designed exclusively for stationary installation and should not be mounted with functional hinges.

Economy Wood Shutters

Economy wood shutters are constructed from Southern Yellow Pine and provide genuine solid-wood construction at a lower price than premium lumber.

Pine shutters can be installed functionally or in a fixed position. Because wood naturally responds to changing outdoor conditions, regular inspection and maintenance of the finish are important for long-term performance.

Vinyl Shutters

Exterior vinyl shutters provide an economical, lightweight, and low-maintenance way to add exterior shutter styling. Molded construction produces the appearance of louvers, raised panels, board and batten, and other popular designs.

Vinyl shutters are designed for stationary decorative installation only. Available dimensions and customization options are more limited than with made-to-order wood, PVC, composite, and aluminum shutters.

Functional or Decorative Exterior Shutters

Exterior shutters can be installed either functionally or in a stationary decorative position.

Premium wood, economy wood, PVC, and aluminum shutters are available for functional applications. Traditional functional shutters mount with exterior hinges and swing from the sides of the window. When closed, properly sized shutters cover the window opening. Bahama shutters operate differently, mounting above the window and closing downward over the opening.

Composite and vinyl shutters are intended for stationary installation only.

Decorative shutters do not need to physically cover the window, but proper proportions make the installation appear more authentic. Selecting the installation method before ordering is important because it can affect shutter dimensions, hardware, and available materials.

Measure for Custom Exterior Shutters

Measure every window individually before ordering. Windows that appear identical can vary slightly in width, height, trim, or surrounding wall space.

For a traditional pair of functional shutters, the combined shutter width should correspond to the opening the shutters are intended to cover. This commonly results in two shutters measuring approximately half the width of the opening. Other functional configurations, including some aluminum and Bahama shutters, have different measuring requirements.

Decorative shutters allow greater flexibility. Select a width that is proportional to the window and fits comfortably within the available wall space. The shutter height should generally correspond closely to the height of the window or window trim.

Always follow the measuring instructions for the specific exterior shutter material before ordering.

Straight and Arch Top Shutters

Most exterior shutters are made with a straight top for rectangular windows. Select louvered, raised panel, flat or grooved panel, and combination shutters can also be manufactured with an arch top to complement the curve of an arched window.

Left and right arch profiles are configured as mirror images so the shutters follow the shape of the opening when positioned on opposite sides of the window. Availability varies by shutter material and style.

Exterior Shutter Paint Colors and Finishes

Color is an important part of how exterior shutters relate to the siding, trim, windows, and front door. ShutterLand offers multiple finishing options depending on shutter material.

Wood, PVC, and composite shutters can be ordered factory painted, primed only, or fully unfinished. Factory-painted shutters are professionally sprayed on all sides for a consistent finish and arrive ready for installation. Standard colors cover many popular exterior combinations, while custom color matching provides additional flexibility.

Powder-coated aluminum shutters receive a durable finish and are available in a broad selection of standard and custom RAL colors.

Vinyl shutter colors are molded through the material. A paintable vinyl option is also available when a specific field-applied color is required.

Black remains a popular exterior shutter color, but the best selection ultimately depends on the colors and architectural character of the individual home.

Cost of Custom Exterior Shutters

The price of exterior shutters is primarily determined by material, style, dimensions, configuration, and finish. Premium materials, larger custom sizes, special profiles, added options, and factory finishing can all affect the final cost.

ShutterLand product pages make it possible to calculate pricing online. Select the desired shutter, enter the required dimensions and options, and the price is calculated before the item is added to the cart.

For projects involving several windows, individual sizes can be configured and added to the same cart. A printable quote can also be generated for review before placing the order.
