A horizontal divider rail creates multiple louver sections. Shutters don’t require a divider rail but one or two can be added for interest. A “division point” is needed for custom locations.

Exterior wooden shutters with louvers are among the most popular ways to add depth, dimension, color and function to homes of all styles. Southern Yellow Pine is the most economical option for construction of wooden shutters with louvers. ShutterLand uses the same professional craftsmanship and attention to detail is used to build all exterior shutters. Pine is an entry-level wood deficient in some of the stronger weather resistant properties of our premium wood louvered shutters, which results in a predictably shorter life expectancy because the material has a greater tendency to expand and contract. Still, they are a great affordable builder grade option to improve curb appeal.

Pine economy shutters with louvers can be painted in one of eight standard or unlimited custom colors to match the front door or existing trim. The DIY homeowner can order wood shutters unfinished to paint or stain after delivery.

Exterior Shutter Hardware

Wood exterior shutters can be installed with functional hardware to swing open and closed. ShutterLand does provide some guidance to help determine the best shutter hinges or shutter dogs. ShutterLand does not sell hardware, but does have a trusted source with great selection, helpful customer service and reasonable pricing. Alternatively, stainless steel screws may be used to secure the shutters directly to the building in a fixed position.

Construction of Wooden Louvered Pine Shutters

ShutterLand begins with straight lengths of Southern Yellow Pine wood that is carefully selected to be 99.9% knot free. The raw wood has a golden sheen and beautiful distinctive wood grain pattern. It is dried in a kiln to eliminate moisture, resulting in a very stable product. From there, individual louvers are milled to a 1 ¾ inch width, and stiles and rails to a 1 inch thickness. Joints of these wooden shutters with louvers are secured with wood dowels, polyurethane exterior glue and 3 ½ inch threaded screws. Pine custom exterior shutters are assembled together with louvers spaced on 1 ¾ inch centers.

When wooden shutters with louvers are installed to be functional, the fixed louvers should orient down and away from the building when closed to direct water away from the window. Conversely, the wooden louvers are positioned up when rotated to the side of the window. The wooden shutters with louvers can be flipped if it is desired to install opposite of standard in a stationary location.

Choose a faux vertical tilt bar to increase the appearance of movable rotating louvers. The tilt bar is a narrow vertical wooden apparatus that interconnects the louvers. It is secured with small nails and wood glue. By default, the tilt bar is attached to the shutter side with downward facing louvers. You will need to specify if it is necessary to modify the tilt bar to be fastened to the side with wooden louvers pointing up.

Louvered Pine shutters are manufactured with 2 1/8” wide side stiles and top and divider rails at 3 ½” height.  The bottom rail size is variable between 3 – 5” height in order to accommodate louver spacing for the window shutter height desired. Use the tool above to show the louver count along with the bottom rail size that will result from any given shutter height.

Louvered Pine Shutter Finishes

ShutterLand sells Pine wooden shutters with louvers in several finishing options based on your needs – unfinished, factory primed, and factory painted.

While Southern Yellow Pine is a beautiful wood in its natural state, it does not weather the elements well without adequate protection from moisture. Unfinished wooden shutters should be properly finished if they are to be used outside. They can be stained and sealed for a natural look, although the finish will require inspection and follow-up on a regular basis to ensure water cannot penetrate the finish. If you prefer to paint them yourself, we recommend a light sanding, followed by primer and two coats of a high-quality exterior grade paint.

Select from nine standard paint colors can be applied in the manufacturing process prior to shipping. These colors are similar to the most popular offerings from Benjamin Moore. Black shutters are the most frequently ordered, with Black Forest Green close behind. We also stock gray, brown, blue, red, and green. If one of our basic hues does not meet your requirements, we can mix a custom color of your choosing. You just need to provide the manufacturer name, color name, and color code. There is a one-time fee per order of $200 for this service. White or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter. The increased amount is needed because light-based colors are more difficult to apply than darker colors, and will be presented for approval before an order is processed.

Options for Wood Louvered Shutters

We can provide special features to conform to the contours or requirements of your windows. Arch top shutters simulate the lines of an arch top window. A horizontal divider rail incorporated into wooden shutters separates the louvers into two sections. A second divider can be added to create three louver areas.

When wooden shutters are installed to be functional, the fixed louvers should orient down and away from the building when closed to direct water away from the window. Conversely, the wood louvers are positioned up when rotated to the side of the window. The shutters can be flipped if it is desired to install opposite of standard in a stationary location.

Choose a faux vertical tilt bar to increase the appearance of movable rotating louvers. The tilt bar is a narrow vertical wood apparatus that interconnects the louvers. It is secured with small nails and wood glue. By default, the tilt bar is attached to the shutter side with downward facing wooden louvers. You will need to specify if it is necessary to modify the tilt bar to be fastened to the side with louvers pointing up.

Unique New England style shutters can be fabricated with shutter horns or tails.

Wooden shutters with louvers currently require about 4-6 weeks to manufacture. After the window shutters are complete, they will be shipped straight to your front door.

If you determine that louvered wooden shutters are not exactly what you need, we do have alternative styles and materials. If price is the primary factor, we suggest our economy line of wooden shutters with louvers built from Southern Yellow Pine. For low maintenance and dependability, consider our louvered composite shutter. If you need a wider louvered shutter, perhaps Bermuda shutters could be what you seek. Some homeowners like just a little more variety and find their solution with combination wood shutters.
