Pine Exterior Wooden Shutters

Installation of pine exterior wooden shutters will add depth, dimension, color and function to any home. Pine shutters are considered the entry-level option for customers who desire the authentic look of wood shutters, but are operating on a more limited budget.

Southern Yellow Pine Shutters

The Southern Pine designation includes ten species of pine that grow in a large range of forests in southeast United States. 90% of the timber inventory is derived from four species of “hard” pines that are commercially termed “Southern Pine” or “Southern Yellow Pine.” Because these varieties are sustainably grown in such a vast area, Pine is a renewable resource with abundant availability to manufacturing facilities.

Pine is graded, starting with Grade B&B, the most clear and highest quality for natural or stain finish. Grade C is the second-highest quality, which permits a very limited number of surface checks and small tight knots. Our exterior wooden shutters are made from hand-selected Pine Grade C or better. This wood has a beautiful golden color with a distinct wood grain pattern that is 99.9% knot free. It is kiln-dried to minimum moisture content and produces a clear, straight product.

Construction of Exterior Pine Shutters

ShutterLand pine shutters are built to order by professional craftsmen with exceptional attention to detail. Starting with quality American-harvested pine wood, lumber is closely inspected and milled to pre-determined specifications. Exterior shutters are assembled with all solid components, and joints are secured with wood dowels, polyurethane exterior glue and 3 ½” threaded screws. The typical timeframe for manufacturing is 4-6 weeks , with additional time required for painting.

For our solid raised panel shutter style, the inside panel is made from a composite material because it has proven to last longer when joined with the wood stiles and rails. During periods of temperature fluctuation, there is less movement between the materials than if all elements were made from solid wood.

Finishing Pine Wooden Shutters

Authentic pine shutters are available unfinished, primed or factory painted. While unfinished pine wooden shutters have an attractive wood grain and golden tone, it is imperative they are thoroughly finished in order to eliminate the penetration of moisture, which eventually leads to decay.

Unfinished wooden exterior shutters will be pre-sanded before shipping, but some light tough-up sanding may be necessary before priming or staining. We recommend priming completely before applying at least two coats of high-quality exterior paint. Application of paint with a sprayer will result in a more even, thorough coverage, although careful brush application can also be acceptable. Louvered pine shutters can be stained with an exterior-grade stain, although stain does not typically protect from moisture and sunlight as well as priming and painting. Solid flat, shaker and raised panel shutters are not stainable because of the composite panel components.

Factory primed shutters area good option if other exterior elements on the house are to be painted at the same time. We use a PPG Seal Grip acrylic universal primer/sealer for exterior wooden shutters. The medium gray primed surface will need to be sanded with 220 grit sandpaper and wiped clear of dust before painting. Then exterior window shutters should be fully covered by a quality exterior paint.

The most thorough paint coverage occurs with a factory-applied finish. ShutterLand offers nine standard paint colors that match popular Benjamin Moore colors. If another color is desired, provide the paint manufacturer, color name and code, and our shop will mix paint to match for a one-time charge of $200 .

Factory painted shutters are primed with PPG Seal Grip acrylic universal primer/sealer, then thoroughly sanded. Finally, they are professionally sprayed with two coats of PPG Break-Through paint, an ultra-durable, water borne exterior acrylic paint in a smooth satin finish. This factory application provides excellent adhesion and a smooth surface that will ensure shutters remain attractive season after season.

Longevity of Outdoor Pine Shutters

Pine is an entry-level wood that does not offer the same longevity as our exterior composite shutters, PVC shutters or premium wood shutters. Builder grade exterior wooden shutters made from pine are a good choice for environments that do not experience extremes in temperature. Because they are more susceptible to changes in temperature and moisture levels, Pine shutters do have a predictably shorter life expectancy. However, with diligent maintenance to protect the finish from deterioration, pine can be a great affordable alternative and give many years of respectable service.

Exterior Wooden Shutter Styles

DIY pine shutters are available in five distinct shutter styles: Louvered, Board & Batten, Raised Panel, Flat Panel and Grooved Panel. All styles can be incorporated into a wide variety of architectural styles, from classic and colonial homes to more modern or split level designs.

Louvered pine exterior wooden shutters have individual slats equally spaced inside a solid frame. This style of shutter is available with a variety of options, including divider rails, faux tilt bars, and customizable arch tops. ShutterLand pine shutters are 1 inch thick with 1 ¾ inch louvers spaced on 1 ¾ inch centers. Complete specifications are provided online to show all relevant dimensions for these louvered pine shutters, including rail and side stiles, louver angles, and even the number of louvers for any given shutter size.

Pine shutters are also available in a flat, grooved or raised panel style, which integrates a solid composite section between a Southern Yellow Pine frame. The interior raised panel is elevated on the front of the window shutter with a beveled edge and flat on the back side. Pine raised panel shutters are manufactured to be 1 inch thick, and additional specifications are available online. The flat and grooved panel styles are an alternative solid panel shutter with a flat central area with vertical ridges cut into the surface to give the appearance of boards.

Measure for Window Shutters

In general, outdoor wooden shutters should be able to fit inside the window they are intended to cover. For quick pricing purposes, each shutter should measure the full height of the window and half of the full width. Before ordering, it is important to decide how the solid shutters will be installed – to be functional with operating hardware or stationary in a fixed position. Then follow our detailed shutter measuring instructions or videos to achieve the best fit. ShutterLand will manufacture the exterior wooden shutters in ¼ inch width and height increments. Measure carefully because these custom shutters will be made to the specifications you provide, and window shutters may not be returned.
