Description

PVC combination shutters bring together traditional individual louvers and solid panels in a single exterior shutter. Each shutter features a louvered section and a solid panel section, available in raised, flat, or shaker designs.

The 1.25-inch-thick shutters are constructed with solid PVC stiles and rails, individual fixed louvers, and a composite center panel. The louvers allow air and light to pass through, while the solid panel provides a contrasting architectural detail.

Choose to position the louvers above or below the solid panel to complement the window and surrounding architecture. The shutters can be installed permanently beside a window or mounted with hinges for functional operation.

Each custom exterior shutter is made to order with a choice of dimensions, top profile, panel design, divider rail location, decorative tilt bar, installation options, and finishes.

PVC Combination Shutter Construction

PVC combination shutters are constructed with solid PVC stiles and rails surrounding individual fixed louvers and a composite center panel. The stiles and rails are 1.25 inches thick and assembled with exterior polyurethane adhesive and threaded screws.

The louvers are 1.625 inches wide and 0.3125 inches thick. Each louver is fixed at a 25-degree angle and positioned within the side stiles. The overlapping arrangement limits direct visibility through the shutter while allowing air and light to pass between the louvers.

The solid center panel is constructed from Extira composite and is available in raised, flat, or shaker designs. The panel has a decorative presentation face and a less detailed, flat back.

The divider rail separates the louvered and solid panel sections. The rails are rabbeted where they meet the louvers to reduce visible gaps.

PVC does not absorb moisture like natural wood, making the frame well suited for exterior applications. Proper painting and routine maintenance help protect the complete shutter assembly and preserve its appearance.

Customize PVC Combination Shutters

Dimensions

Select the finished width and height of each individual shutter, not the dimensions of the window.

PVC combination shutters are available from 12 to 36 inches wide and 28 to 95 inches tall, in 0.25-inch increments.

For functional installation, shutters must be sized to cover the window opening while allowing sufficient clearance to operate. Depending on window depth and the selected hardware, functional shutters may close within the window opening or in front of the window casing.

Stationary shutters are sized primarily for appearance and proportion beside the window. Traditional proportions generally approximate one-half the window opening width for each shutter, although available wall space and architectural details may influence the final dimensions.

Determine the intended installation method and hardware before measuring. Refer to the PVC exterior shutter measuring instructions for detailed sizing recommendations.

Top Profile

Choose a straight or arch top profile.

A straight top is appropriate for standard rectangular windows. Arch-top shutters can follow the contour of an arched window and are ordered as either Arch Left or Arch Right.

For a pair of arch-top shutters, one left and one right shutter are normally required. A custom arch also requires a springline measurement from the top of the shutter down to the point where the arch begins.

Louvers

PVC combination shutters contain individual 1.625-inch-wide louvers that are 0.3125 inches thick. Each louver is fixed at a 25-degree angle and does not rotate.

Open space between the louvers allows air and light to pass through. The louvers overlap when viewed straight ahead, reducing the direct line of sight through the shutter.

Choose louvers fixed in either the up or down orientation. For functional installations, the louvers should slope downward and away from the building when the shutters are closed. When swung open against the wall, the visible orientation is reversed.

Divider Rail

A divider rail is a horizontal frame member that separates the louvered and solid panel sections of a combination shutter.

Every PVC combination shutter requires a divider rail. The rail can be centered or positioned at a custom location to establish the desired proportions between the louvers and solid panel.

For a custom location, measure from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the divider rail.

The actual divider rail location may be slightly higher or lower than requested because the number and spacing of the louvers influence the final position.

Configuration

Choose the arrangement of the louvered and solid panel sections.

Louvers Top / Panel Bottom

The upper section contains individual fixed louvers, while the lower section contains a solid composite panel. This is a traditional combination shutter arrangement commonly associated with Colonial and other historic architectural styles.

Panel Top / Louvers Bottom

The upper section contains a solid composite panel, while the lower section features individual fixed louvers. This arrangement provides an alternative appearance and may be selected to complement existing shutters or architectural details.

Both configurations are available with raised, flat, or shaker panels.

Raised Panel

The raised panel has a beveled perimeter that produces additional depth and a traditional architectural appearance.

Flat Panel

The flat panel has a smooth face surrounded by solid PVC stiles and rails. Its simple profile works with both traditional and contemporary architecture.

Shaker Panel

The shaker panel begins with a flat composite panel and adds vertical grooves to create the appearance of individual boards. The number of grooves varies with shutter width to maintain balanced proportions.

Faux Tilt Bar

Traditional operable louvered shutters often use a vertical tilt bar to rotate multiple movable louvers together. The louvers in ShutterLand PVC combination shutters are fixed, so an optional faux tilt bar is available to reproduce this traditional appearance.

Most installations do not require a tilt bar. It is primarily selected for architectural detail, historic applications, or to match existing shutters.

The tilt bar is attached to the louvered section and can be positioned on either the louvers-up or louvers-down side of the shutter according to the installation.

Installation

No Hardware

Select No Hardware when the required mounting hardware will be obtained separately. Functional installations require separately sourced hinges and lower supports. This option may also be selected for stationary shutters installed with a mounting method other than ShutterLand’s fixed brackets.

ShutterLand recommends installing with a hinge and shutter dog support kit (Amazon link). If suitable hanging hinges are already installed or will be purchased separately, a shutter dog support kit can be purchased separately to hold the shutters open and provide the required lower support.

Functional PVC combination shutters require hanging hinges distributed along the shutter height and a lower support beneath the bottom edge opposite the hinges when fully open.

Shutter HeightMinimum Functional Support
Under 84 inchesTop hinge + bottom hinge + 1 intermediate hinge + 1 lower support
84 inches or tallerTop hinge + bottom hinge + 2 intermediate hinges + 1 lower support

The lower support must contact and help carry the weight of the shutter when fully open. It may be a separate component or incorporated into a combined shutter dog support. A standard shutter dog used only to hold the shutter open does not replace the required lower support.

Fixed Brackets

Select Fixed Brackets when the shutters will remain permanently mounted beside the window. The mounting system uses an aluminum French cleat at the top of the shutter and L-shaped brackets at the bottom and sides.

The French cleat supports the shutter’s weight from above. The L-brackets secure the lower and side edges and prevent the shutter from lifting off the cleat. Mounting screws must reach an appropriate structural surface rather than relying on siding alone.

Complete mounting procedures, hardware placement, and support requirements are provided in the PVC exterior shutter installation instructions.

Exterior Shutter Hardware

PVC exterior shutters can be installed with either the included fixed Polycarbonate brackets or functional hardware to swing open and closed. Reference the installation page for written and video guidance to help determine the best shutter hinges or shutter dogs. ShutterLand does not sell hardware, but does have a trusted source with great selection, helpful customer service and reasonable pricing.

Finish

PVC combination shutters are available unfinished, factory primed, or factory painted.

Unfinished – Paint Grade

The shutters arrive ready for field preparation and painting. The solid PVC frame, louvers, and composite center panel should be properly prepared and primed before applying the finish coat.

Primed

A factory-applied primer prepares the shutters for exterior painting after delivery.

Painted – Standard Color

Choose from nine standard paint colors. Factory-painted shutters arrive finished and ready for installation. Touch-up paint is included.

Painted – Custom Color

PVC shutters can be matched to virtually any exterior paint color by providing the paint manufacturer, color name, and color number. Custom color matching is a one-time charge of $250 per color, not per shutter. Custom white or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter, presented for approval before processing.

Ordering Details

Shutter Quantity

PVC shutters are priced and ordered individually, not as pairs.

Most windows use two shutters, so a typical window requires a quantity of 2. Shutters are sold individually because some installations require only one shutter or a single replacement.

Enter the total number of individual shutters needed in the Quantity field.

Production Time

PVC combination shutters are made to order. Current production time is approximately 5-7 weeks before shipment. Production estimates may change with manufacturing demand.

Shipping

Standard shipping for PVC shutters is $100 per order.

Shipping is FREE when the shutter order exceeds $1,000.

A flat oversized shipping rate of $300 is applied when an individual shutter within the order has a width equal to or more than 24" or a height equal to or more than 86".

PVC Shutter Maintenance

PVC exterior shutters require relatively little routine maintenance. Periodically clean the shutters with mild soap and water to remove dirt, pollen, salt residue, and other surface deposits.

Inspect painted surfaces for scratches, chips, or other finish damage and touch up as needed. Particular attention should be given to edges, joints, and areas around hardware.

Functional shutters should also be inspected periodically to confirm that hinges, fasteners, and lower supports remain secure and that the shutters continue to operate properly.

See the exterior shutter care and maintenance guide for additional cleaning, inspection, and touch-up recommendations.
