Description

Wood Bahama shutters shade exterior windows and add distinctive coastal character to a home. Also called Bermuda shutters, they hinge above the window and lift outward from the bottom. Adjustable support arms hold the shutter open, while spaces between the fixed louvers allow airflow and a partial view outside.

Each shutter is custom-made from Red Grandis, Cedar, or Mahogany, with options for size, louver configuration, and finish.

Wood Bahama shutters are not hurricane rated. For tested hurricane protection, select the Hurricane Protection configuration on our aluminum Bahama shutters.

Wood Bahama Shutter Construction

Solid wood stiles, rails and louvers form a 1.5-inch-thick shutter. Our wood shutter construction uses kiln-dried lumber, with frame joints secured by wood dowels, exterior polyurethane glue and threaded screws. Individual louvers fit into precisely machined slots and remain fixed in position.

A well-maintained finish helps protect the wood from moisture. Periodically inspect for worn paint or small cracks and touch up exposed areas. Follow our exterior shutter care instructions for cleaning and maintenance.

Wood Bahama Shutter Options

Dimensions

Select the finished width and height of each exterior shutter. Widths range from 15 to 85 inches, and heights range from 18 to 85 inches, both in 0.25-inch increments.

The required dimensions depend on whether the shutter will fit inside the window opening or overlap it from the outside. Establish the hinge location and check window depth, trim and sill clearance before ordering.

Use our Bahama shutter measuring instructions to determine the correct dimensions for each window.

Vertical Sub-Stiles

Vertical sub-stiles divide the shutter into side-by-side sections of horizontal louvers. These members support the louvers and allow wider shutters to span the window.

At least one sub-stile is required when the shutter is wider than 23.5 inches. Available configurations depend on shutter width:

Bahama shutter with no sub-stiles.No Sub-Stile
Shutter Width: 15 – 23.5″
One sub-stile on exterior Bermuda shutter.
One Sub-Stile
Shutter Width: 23.75 – 45″
Two sub stiles on outdoor Bermuda shutter. Two Sub-Stiles
Shutter Width: 36 – 66.25″
Outdoor Bermuda shutter with 3 vertical sub stiles.Three Sub-Stiles
Shutter Width: 48 – 85″
Wide outdoor Bahama shutter with 4 vertical sub stiles.Four Sub-Stiles
Shutter Width: 60 – 85″

Where the ranges overlap, more than one configuration is available. The preferred layout depends on the window proportions and desired appearance.

Louver Size

Choose between 1.75-inch and 1.5-inch louvers.

The standard 1.75-inch louvers are fixed at a 30-degree angle. The 1.5-inch louvers are fixed at a 45-degree angle and are available for an additional charge.

Both options use individual solid wood slats with open space between them. The louvers do not rotate. The support arms adjust the opening angle of the entire shutter, which also affects the view through the louvers.

Divider Rail

A divider rail separates the louvers into upper and lower sections. Available configurations include no divider rail, one centered rail, one rail at a custom location, or two rails at custom locations.

Select no divider rail, one centered rail, one rail at a custom location, or two rails at custom locations.

One custom divider rail on louvered shutter.Divider Rail (Optional):
Division Point: Measure from the bottom of the shutter to the desired center of the divider rail.
The actual location of the divider rail may be slightly higher or lower than requested. The number of louvers will dictate the final placement.

Top Hinge

A full-width top hinge supports the shutter and allows the bottom to lift outward. The aluminum hinge is cut to the shutter width and arrives in a natural, unpainted silver finish.

Hinge selection depends on the mounting surface and required clearance:

Standard depth Bahama hinge diagram for wood shutters.Standard Hinge
Wood shutters are 1.5” thick, leaving no clearance behind the shutter.
Deep Bahama hinge diagram for wood shutters.Deep Top Hinge
Gives 0.875” margin for wood shutters.
Top mount flat Bahama hinge diagram for wood shutters.Flat Top Hinge
Deep windows that can accommodate the shutter to nest inside the opening. The hinge screws to the header.

Hinges are available for an additional charge. Installation screws are not included.

Support Arms

Adjustable support arms, also called shutter stays, hold the bottom of the shutter away from the window. Choose an arm kit based on shutter height, the desired opening angle and the bracket locations.

Bahama shutter support arms that hold the shutter away from the wall.Adjustable Support Arm Lengths:

12″ Arms:
The 12″ arms extend to a maximum length of 20″ (including the brackets).

18″ Arms:
The 18″ arms extend to a maximum length of 32″ (including the brackets).

24″ Arms:
The 24″ arms extend to a maximum length of 44″ (including the brackets).

Wall Brackets (Camel Brackets):
1.125″ wide, 2.375″ tall, 1.375″ deep

Shutter-Side Brackets:
1.125″ wide, 1.0625″ tall, 1.5″ deep

The support-arm calculator compares lengths based on shutter height and the preferred opening angle. Mounting the brackets higher on the shutter and wall changes the required arm length.

Support arms are silver aluminum and are available for an additional charge. Select No Hardware when supports will be sourced separately. Installation screws are not included.

Review our Bahama shutter installation instructions for hinge mounting and support-arm placement.

Finish

Choose from five finish options:

Unfinished – Paint Grade
Raw, sanded wood prepared for priming and painting. Small imperfections may be repaired with wood filler. Complete the exterior finish before installation.

Unfinished – Stain Grade
Wood selected for relatively uniform grain, with stainable filler used for minor repairs. Choose this option when staining so the natural wood remains visible.

Primed
A factory-applied primer/sealer prepares the shutters for finish paint. Lightly sand, remove dust and apply compatible exterior paint before installation.

Painted – Standard Color
Choose from nine standard exterior shutter paint colors. All surfaces receive primer and two factory-applied topcoats in a satin finish. Matching touch-up paint is included. Standard white adds $35 per shutter.

Painted – Custom Color
Provide the paint manufacturer, color name and color code to match. Color matching is $250 per custom color per order. Custom white or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter, presented for approval before processing.

See our exterior shutter finishing guide for preparation, painting and paint-curing instructions.

Wood Species

Choose from three kiln-dried premium woods:

Red Grandis
A strong, stable hardwood with straight grain and relatively few knots. It accepts paint or stain and is the most economical of the three premium woods.

Cedar
A traditional shutter wood with natural resistance to insects and decay. Its grain includes variations of red, brown and tan, and it can be painted or stained.

Mahogany
A dense hardwood with fine grain and rich reddish-brown color. Its natural appearance makes it particularly attractive for stained shutters.

Compare our premium wood shutter materials for additional information about appearance, performance and price.

Shutter Quantity

Wood Bahama shutters are priced and ordered individually. One full-width shutter generally covers one window, so a typical window requires a quantity of 1.

Individual ordering accommodates different window sizes, openings that need multiple panels and single-shutter replacements.

Enter the number of shutters needed with the selected dimensions and options. Add shutters with different sizes or configurations as separate items in the order.
