Description

Wood louvered shutters are a traditional choice for homes where real wood construction and authentic architectural detail are important. Each shutter is built with individual solid wood louvers set between substantial stiles and rails, giving it the depth and proportions of a true exterior shutter.

The shutters are 1.5 inches thick and made from kiln-dried Red Grandis, Cedar or Mahogany. Components are joined with wood dowels, exterior polyurethane adhesive and threaded screws to create a strong, durable assembly.

Wood louvered shutters can be installed stationary beside the window or mounted with hinges for functional operation. Both the front and back are fully detailed, so they are well suited for installations where the shutters may be viewed from either side.

Each exterior shutter is made to order with custom dimensions and a choice of profiles, louver sizes, divider rails, decorative tilt bars, wood species and finish options.

Customize Your Wood Louvered Shutters

Dimensions

Select the finished width and height of each individual shutter, not the dimensions of the window.

For functional shutters that will close over the window, the pair is generally sized to cover the opening with clearance for operation. Stationary shutters are sized primarily for proper proportion beside the window.

See our wood exterior shutter measuring instructions before ordering.

Top Profile

Choose a straight or arch top profile.

A straight top is appropriate for standard rectangular windows. Arch top shutters can be used to follow the contour of an arched window and are ordered as either Arch Left or Arch Right.

For a pair of arch-top shutters, one left and one right shutter are normally required. A custom arch also requires a springline measurement, measured from the top of the shutter down to the point where the arch begins.

Unique New England-style shutters can be fabricated with shutter horns or tails for a more traditional regional appearance. This is a custom option and cannot be selected through the standard order form above.

Louver Size

Choose between 1.75-inch louvers or 1.5-inch louvers.

The 1.75-inch louver is the standard configuration. The 1.5-inch louver provides a slightly finer, more traditional appearance and is available for an additional charge.

Both styles use individual solid wood louvers with open space between the slats. The louvers are fixed in position and do not rotate.

Divider Rail

A divider rail is a horizontal member that separates the louvers into two sections. It can also be useful for visually aligning the shutter with a horizontal feature of the window, such as a sash or mullion. A divider rail is required on shutters 90 inches or taller.

Depending on shutter height, select:

  • No divider rail
  • One centered divider rail
  • One divider rail at a custom location
  • Two divider rails at custom locations

For a custom location, measure from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the divider rail. When two divider rails are selected, provide this measurement for both.

The final divider rail location may be slightly higher or lower than requested, but will not move more than half of the louver spacing. The number of louvers and shutter height will determine the exact final position.

Faux Tilt Bar

Traditional operable louvered shutters often use a vertical tilt bar to rotate multiple movable louvers together. The louvers in ShutterLand wood shutters are fixed, so a faux tilt bar is available to reproduce this traditional appearance.

Most installations do not require a tilt bar. It is primarily selected for architectural detail, historic applications, or to match existing shutters.

When a shutter contains a divider rail, the order form allows the tilt bar to be applied to selected louver sections. The tilt bar can also be positioned on either the louvers-up or louvers-down side of the shutter as required by the installation.

Installation

Premium wood shutters can be installed either stationary or functional.

Select Fixed Brackets when the shutters will be permanently mounted beside the window. The brackets secure the shutter directly to the structure while remaining largely concealed after installation.

Select No Hardware when installing the shutters with separately purchased hinges or another mounting method.

Functional shutter hinges, pintles, shutter dogs and other traditional hardware are not included with the shutters. See our exterior shutter hardware options and wood shutter installation instructions for additional information.

Exterior Shutter Hardware

Wood exterior shutters can be installed with operable hardware to swing open and closed. Written and video instructions provide step-by-step guidance to help select the right shutter hinges or shutter dogs. ShutterLand does not sell hardware, but recommends a trusted supplier with a wide selection, knowledgeable support, and fair pricing. As an alternative, fixed mounting brackets may be used to attach the shutters directly to the structure in a non-operable position.

Finish

Premium wood shutters are available unfinished, factory primed or factory painted.

Unfinished – Paint Grade
The shutters arrive raw and sanded, ready for on-site priming and painting. Small natural imperfections may be repaired with wood filler during manufacturing.

Unfinished – Stain Grade
Wood is selected for a more uniform grain and prepared for applications where the natural character of the wood will remain visible. Minor repairs, when necessary, are made with stainable filler.

Primed
The shutters receive a factory-applied primer/sealer and are ready for final preparation and painting after delivery.

Painted – Standard Color
Choose from nine exterior shutter standard paint colors. Factory-painted shutters arrive finished on all surfaces and ready for installation. Touch-up paint is included.

Painted – Custom Color
Shutters can be matched to virtually any exterior paint color by providing the paint manufacturer, color name and color number. Custom color matching is a one-time $250 charge per color, not per shutter. Custom white or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter, presented for approval before processing.

Wood Species

Choose from three kiln-dried premium woods.

Red Grandis
Red Grandis is a strong, dimensionally stable hardwood with relatively straight grain and minimal knotting. It accepts paint and stain well and provides an excellent combination of appearance, performance and value.

Cedar
Cedar is a traditional material for exterior shutters with natural resistance to insects and decay. It is lighter than many hardwoods and has an attractive grain with variations of red, brown and tan. Cedar can be painted or stained.

Mahogany
Mahogany is a dense hardwood with fine grain and rich reddish-brown tones. Its natural appearance makes it particularly attractive for stained shutters. Mahogany shutters are heavier than Red Grandis or Cedar.

All three woods are suitable for premium exterior louvered shutters. The best selection often depends on the desired finish, appearance and budget.

Ordering Details

Shutter Quantity

Premium wood shutters are priced and ordered individually, not as pairs.

Most windows use two shutters, so a typical window requires a quantity of 2. Shutters are sold individually because some applications require only one shutter, and a customer may occasionally need a single replacement rather than a complete pair.

Enter the total number of individual shutters needed in the Quantity field.

Production Time

Premium wood shutters are made to order. Current production time is approximately 5-7 weeks before shipment. Production estimates are updated as manufacturing demand changes.

Shipping

Standard shipping for premium wood shutters is $100 per order.

Shipping is FREE when the shutter order exceeds $1,000.

Oversized shutters are subject to a separate oversize shipping rate. An order containing a shutter 24 inches wide or greater, or 86 inches high or greater, is charged a one-time $300 oversize shipping rate for the entire order. The oversize shipping charge applies even when the order exceeds the $1,000 free-shipping threshold.
