Description

Exterior Bahama aluminum shutters are built for both extraordinary beauty and exceptional functionality. They hinge at the top of the window and lift open from the bottom to serve multiple purposes. They provide continuous shade, moderate privacy and direct rainwater away from the home, allowing windows to remain open during moderate weather.

Custom aluminum Bahama shutters are available in hurricane impact-rated and decorative-only configurations. Hurricane-rated shutters incorporate reinforced louvers and approved closure hardware to help protect windows from hurricane-force winds and windborne debris. Decorative-only shutters provide the same durable aluminum construction and functional operation but are not approved for hurricane protection. Top hinges and support arms are included, with multiple closure, finish and installation options available.

Aluminum Bahama exterior shutters are a distinctive and functional window covering popular in coastal regions. Designed to defend from hurricanes, intense sunlight, and severe weather while maintaining aesthetic appeal, these hinged shutters mount at the top of windows and can be easily opened and closed. Unlike traditional shutters that open side-to-side, Bahama shutters pivot outward from the top, offering a unique architectural style that evokes tropical and Caribbean design elements.

There are two types of aluminum Bahama shutters: hurricane impact-rated and decorative only.

Aluminum Bahama Hurricane-Rated Shutters

Hurricane-rated shutters are manufactured from durable extruded aluminum and engineered to help protect windows from hurricane-force winds and windborne debris. Approved configurations comply with Florida Building Code (FBC) requirements and may be used in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), including Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, when manufactured and installed according to the applicable Florida Product Approval drawings. The shutters also carry a Texas Department of Insurance product evaluation for designated coastal windstorm areas. Approved sizes, design pressures, anchoring requirements and installation methods vary by application, and local permitting requirements apply.

Aluminum Bahama Decorative Shutters

Decorative louvers are very rigid, but are hollow and not made to absorb heavy impact. Both variations offer 1.5-inch louvers, but decorative-only shutters can also be made with 2-inch louvers.

Measure Bahama Shutter Size

Bahama shutters are made to cover a window with a single shutter. The width and height measurements are critical to success. ShutterLand provides specific written and video instructions on how to measure for aluminum Bahama shutters. The height measurement is unique because the ordered size includes both the shutter and the top hinge. Vertical sub-stiles create multiple horizontal louver areas in wider shutters. The number of sub-stiles is displayed in the schedule below.

Bahama Shutter Divider Rail

A divider rail is a horizontal bar that creates top and bottom louver areas. It can be inserted for visual interest but is not required for structural purposes. Specify the divider rail location by measuring from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the division.

Top Bahama Style Shutter Hinge

Every Aluminum Bahama shutter comes with a pre-attached top hanging hinge that spans the full width of the panel. This hinge secures the shutter above the window and allows it to swing outward for the desired ventilation, shade, and storm protection.

Two hinge depths are available:

Standard Hinge – Designed with just enough depth to match the thickness of the shutter panel. This keeps the shutter mounted close to the building surface for a compact appearance.

Build-Out Hinge – Extends the shutter an additional one inch away from the window, providing extra clearance for obstructions such as window trim, handles, or protruding frames.

Bahama Aluminum Shutter Hardware

Aluminum Bahama shutters are shipped complete with the hardware necessary for both everyday use and storm protection.

Support Arms & Camel Brackets – Each shutter includes adjustable support arms that hold the panel securely in the open position. The arms attach to the building with camel brackets, which also function with a locking pin to secure the shutters in a closed position when needed.

Z-Clamps for Storm Protection – All hurricane-rated Bahama shutters arrive with z-clamps, designed to secure the shutters firmly against the building during tropical storms or hurricanes, adding critical strength and wind resistance.

Optional Pin Latches – For faster and more convenient operation, shutters can be equipped with pin latches. These feature an integrated slide bolt that engages with a receiving bracket along the shutter’s side, making it quick and easy to secure the panels.

Exterior Aluminum Shutter Colors

The powder-coated finish of aluminum Bahama shutters is durable, smooth, and weather-resistant, available in 20 standard RAL colors. These standard colors provide a variety of classic and modern shades to complement different architectural styles. Additionally, homeowners or businesses can opt for 174 RAL custom color finishes, offering a nearly unlimited selection to match specific design preferences. The powder-coated finish not only enhances aesthetics but also provides superior protection against corrosion, UV exposure, and harsh weather conditions, ensuring longevity and low maintenance. Opt for an epoxy prime coat for enhanced durability, especially for structures along the coast.
