Description

PVC solid panel shutters are built with stiles and rails surrounding a central panel. Three panel designs are available: raised, flat and shaker.

The substantial 1.25-inch-thick construction allows these shutters to be permanently mounted beside a window or installed with functional hinges to swing open and closed.

Raised panel shutters provide traditional architectural depth, flat panel shutters offer a clean and simple appearance, and shaker shutters incorporate vertical grooves for the look of individual boards within a framed panel.

Each custom exterior shutter is made to order with custom dimensions and a choice of panel design, top profile, divider rail configuration, installation method and finish.

PVC Panel Shutter Construction

Heavy-duty PVC panel shutters are built with solid PVC stiles and rails surrounding a solid composite center panel. The stiles and rails are 1.25 inches thick and joined with exterior polyurethane adhesive and threaded screws to create a strong, substantial assembly.

The composite center panel is available in raised, flat and shaker designs. Raised panels have a beveled face for added depth, flat panels have a smooth face, and shaker panels use vertical grooves to create the appearance of individual boards. The back of the center panel is flat and less detailed than the presentation face.

PVC does not absorb moisture like natural wood, making the frame well suited for exterior applications. Proper painting and routine maintenance help protect the complete shutter assembly and preserve its appearance.

Customize PVC Panel Shutters

Dimensions

Select the finished width and height of each individual shutter, not the dimensions of the window.

PVC panel shutters are available from 12 to 36 inches wide and 18 to 95 inches tall, in 0.25-inch increments.

For functional installation, shutters must be sized to cover the window opening while allowing sufficient clearance to operate. Depending on window depth and the selected hardware, functional shutters may close within the window opening or in front of the window casing.

Stationary shutters are sized primarily for appearance and proportion beside the window. Traditional proportions generally approximate one-half the window opening width for each shutter, although available wall space and architectural details may influence the final dimensions.

Determine the intended installation method and hardware before measuring. Refer to the PVC exterior shutter measuring instructions for detailed sizing recommendations.

Panel Design

Choose from three panel designs. Panels have detail on the front and are flat on the back.

Raised Panel
The raised panel has a beveled perimeter that produces additional depth and a traditional architectural appearance. Raised panel shutters are commonly associated with Colonial, Georgian and other traditional home styles.

Flat Panel
The flat panel has a smooth face surrounded by the PVC stiles and rails. Its simpler profile works with both traditional and contemporary architecture.

Shaker Panel
The shaker panel starts with a flat center panel and adds vertical grooves to create the appearance of individual boards. This configuration is often used on farmhouse, cottage and casual architectural styles.

The number of grooves in a shaker panel varies with shutter width to maintain balanced proportions.

Top Profile

Choose a straight or arch top profile.

A straight top is appropriate for standard rectangular windows. Arch-top shutters can follow the contour of an arched window and are ordered as either Arch Left or Arch Right.

For a pair of arch-top shutters, one left and one right shutter are normally required. A custom arch also requires a springline measurement from the top of the shutter down to the point where the arch begins.

Divider Rail

A divider rail is a horizontal frame member that separates the center panel into two sections. It can also visually align the shutter with a horizontal window feature such as a sash or mullion.

A divider rail is optional on shutters shorter than 90 inches and required at 90 inches or taller.

Depending on shutter height, select:

  • No divider rail
  • One centered divider rail
  • One divider rail at a custom location
  • Two divider rails at custom locations
Custom divider rail location for flat and shaker panel shutters.

For a custom location, measure from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the divider rail.

Multiple divider rails custom location on exterior shutter.

When two divider rails are selected, measure from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the first divider rail. Then, measure from the bottom of the shutter to the center of the second divider rail.

Installation

No Hardware

Select No Hardware when the required mounting hardware will be obtained separately. Functional installations require separately sourced hinges and lower supports. This option may also be selected for stationary shutters installed with a mounting method other than ShutterLand’s fixed brackets. ShutterLand recommends installing with a hinge and shutter dog support kit (Amazon link). If suitable hanging hinges are already installed or will be purchased separately, a shutter dog support kit can be purchased separately to hold the shutters open and provide the required lower support.

Functional PVC solid panel shutters require hanging hinges distributed along the shutter height and a lower support beneath the bottom edge opposite the hinges when fully open.

Shutter HeightMinimum Functional Support
Under 84 inchesTop hinge + bottom hinge + 1 intermediate hinge + 1 lower support
84 inches or tallerTop hinge + bottom hinge + 2 intermediate hinges + 1 lower support

Fixed Brackets

Select Fixed Brackets when the shutters will remain permanently mounted beside the window. The mounting system uses an aluminum French cleat at the top of the shutter and L-shaped brackets at the bottom and sides.

The French cleat supports the shutter’s weight from above. The L-brackets secure the lower and side edges and prevent the shutter from lifting off the cleat. Mounting screws must reach an appropriate structural surface rather than relying on siding alone.

Complete mounting procedures, hardware placement, and support requirements are provided in the PVC exterior shutter installation instructions.

Finish

PVC panel shutters are available unfinished, factory primed or factory painted.

Unfinished – Paint Grade
The shutters arrive ready for final preparation and painting. Both the solid PVC frame and composite center panel must be properly prepared and primed before painting to promote adhesion and ensure a durable exterior finish.

Primed
A factory-applied primer prepares the shutters for exterior painting after delivery.

Painted – Standard Color
Choose from nine exterior shutter standard paint colors. Factory-painted shutters arrive finished and ready for installation. Touch-up paint is included.

Painted – Custom Color
PVC shutters can be matched to virtually any exterior paint color by providing the paint manufacturer, color name and color number. Custom color matching is a one-time charge of $250 per color, not per shutter. Custom white or light-base colors may require an additional $35 per shutter, presented for approval before processing.

Ordering Details

Shutter Quantity

PVC shutters are priced and ordered individually, not as pairs.

Most windows use two shutters, so a typical window requires a quantity of 2. Shutters are sold individually because some installations require only one shutter or a single replacement.

Enter the total number of individual shutters needed in the Quantity field.

Production Time

PVC panel shutters are made to order. Current production time is approximately 5-7 weeks before shipment. Production estimates are updated as manufacturing demand changes.

Shipping

Standard shipping for PVC shutters is $100 per order.

Shipping is FREE when the shutter order exceeds $1,000.

A flat oversized shipping rate of $300 is applied when an individual shutter within the order has a width equal to or more than 24" or a height equal to or more than 86".

PVC Shutter Maintenance

PVC panel shutters require relatively little routine maintenance. Periodically wash painted surfaces with mild soap and water to remove dirt, pollen and other residue.

Inspect painted surfaces for scratches, chips or other damage and touch up the finish as needed. Functional installations should also be inspected periodically to confirm that hinges, pintles, lower supports and fasteners remain secure.

Avoid abrasive pads, harsh commercial cleaners or aggressive pressure washing that can damage the painted surface.

See the complete exterior shutter care and maintenance guide for additional cleaning and touch-up recommendations.
