Care and Cleaning of Vinyl Shutters

Regular maintenance of vinyl shutters both extends the useful life and keeps them looking their best. Exterior shutters naturally get dirty because they are exposed to the outdoor elements. Cleaning is the best way to ensure vinyl shutters maintain their luster.

For a quick easy clean, spray the shutters with a garden hose. Do not use a high pressure power washer. This should remove 90% of the accumulated dirt. A more thorough washing can be achieved by scrubbing with a soft bristle brush. The removal of debris may be assisted by spraying with the following cleaning solution:

  • 1/3 cup detergent (Tide for example)
  • 2/3 cup Tri-Sodium (Soilax for example)
  • 4 quarts of water

Apply the solution several minutes before scrubbing to loosen unwanted particles. Wash from top to bottom and rinse thoroughly to avoid staining and/or streaking.
